How to edit a PDF online

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Drop in the document. It opens in the editor right in your browser and is never uploaded.

  2. 2

    Add what you need

Pick a tool — text, image, draw, shapes, highlight, whiteout, link, note or signature — then click or drag on the page. Drag to move, use the handles to resize, and pick fonts and colours from the panel.

  3. 3

    Download

Press Download to get a new PDF with your additions built in. The original file is left exactly as it was.

Frequently asked

Can I change the text that is already in the PDF?+

Yes, with Pro. Choose Edit text, click a line and retype it. The original is removed from the page itself where the PDF’s structure allows, and covered in the paper colour otherwise; the new text is set in a matching font. It works a line at a time — the rest of the page does not reflow, so a much longer line will run past its old end.

Will the text look the same on someone else's computer?+

Yes. The fonts you type in are embedded in the PDF itself, so the document looks identical in every viewer and when printed.

What happens to my edits if I close the tab?+

They are saved as a draft on your own device — nothing is uploaded — and the editor offers to pick up where you left off when you come back. Pro users can also press Save to cloud to keep a draft under their account and open it on another device; the editor asks before anything is uploaded.

Which image formats can I add?+

PNG and JPEG are placed as they are. WebP, GIF and BMP work too; they are converted to PNG on your device first.

Can I add, remove or turn pages in the editor?+

Yes. The Pages menu rotates the current page, moves it up or down, deletes it, inserts a blank page after it, or inserts the pages of another PDF. Anything you have added to a page turns and moves with it.

Do highlights and notes work in other PDF readers?+

Yes. Highlights, drawings and shapes are drawn into the page itself, so they show everywhere. Links and sticky notes are saved as standard PDF annotations, which Acrobat, Preview, Chrome and the rest all understand.

Does whiteout really remove what is underneath?+

No — it covers it, like correction fluid on paper. The original text is still in the file. To remove something so it cannot be recovered, use Redact PDF.

Is Edit PDF free to use?+

Yes. Edit PDF is free and unlimited, with no account and no watermark added to your document.

Are my files uploaded to a server?+

No. Edit PDF runs entirely inside your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

Which browsers does it work in?+

Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on desktop, tablet and phone.
