How to add Bates numbers to PDFs
- 1
Add the documents in order
Drop in every PDF in the production and put them in order with the arrows. Numbering runs on from the last page of one file to the first of the next.
- 2
Set the number
Choose a prefix (often the client or case code), the first number and how many digits to pad to, such as ABC000001. Move it to any corner, or add a confidentiality line beside it.
- 3
Download
Each file is saved named by its Bates range, with a Bates index listing every file's first and last number. Download them one by one or as a zip.

Frequently asked
What is Bates numbering?+
A unique, sequential number stamped on every page of a set of documents, used in litigation and discovery so any page can be cited exactly. It usually combines a prefix identifying the party or case with a zero-padded number, such as SMITH000123.
Does numbering continue across several PDFs?+
Yes. Add the files in the order they are produced; the first page of each file takes the next number after the last page of the one before.
Can I add a confidentiality legend too?+
Yes. Type it in any of the other five positions, such as “CONFIDENTIAL — SUBJECT TO PROTECTIVE ORDER” at bottom left, and it is printed on every page with the number.
Are my documents uploaded?+
No. The numbers are written into the PDFs inside your browser, so privileged or confidential material never leaves your computer.
