Frequently asked

Is a bill of sale legally required?+

It depends on the state. Some require one to register or title the vehicle, many recommend one, and either way it is the buyer's and seller's record of the price, date and condition of the sale. The certificate of title must still be signed over; a bill of sale does not replace it.

What does the odometer statement do?+

Federal law requires the seller to state the mileage when ownership changes, for vehicles of model year 2011 or newer until they are 20 years old. Older vehicles, and trucks over 16,000 lb, are exempt. The statement is included on every form here, with the exact federal warning.

Do I need a notary?+

Most states do not require a notarized bill of sale for a private car sale, but a few do for some vehicles, and some buyers ask for one. Tick the notary option and the form gets a notary acknowledgment section.

What does "sold as is" mean?+

That the seller gives no warranty: the buyer accepts the vehicle in its current condition, faults included. It is the norm for private sales. Untick it if the seller is promising anything, and write the promise in the extra terms.

Can we sign it without meeting?+

Yes. Sign it online with Signzuma: the form goes to each person with their signature box already in place, they sign on their phone, and everyone gets the signed PDF with a certificate of who signed, when and from where. Three documents a month are free.

Does my state have its own form?+

Several do. Florida's official HSMV 82050 is filled in here; for other states this general bill of sale covers what a bill of sale needs, and your motor vehicle office's own form can be used alongside it.

Is my information uploaded?+

No. The form is made in your browser. Only a VIN you look up is sent, to the free federal NHTSA vehicle database.

Is Vehicle bill of sale free to use?+

Yes. Vehicle bill of sale is free and unlimited, with no account and no watermark added to your document.

Are my files uploaded to a server?+

No. Vehicle bill of sale runs entirely inside your browser, so the document never leaves your device.

Which browsers does it work in?+

Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on desktop, tablet and phone.
