Frequently asked

Is this the official Florida form?+

Yes. It fills the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' own form, HSMV 82050 (Notice of Sale and/or Bill of Sale for a Motor Vehicle, Mobile Home, Off-Highway Vehicle or Vessel), downloaded from flhsmv.gov.

What is the Notice of Sale for?+

It tells the state the vehicle is no longer yours. Florida law expects a seller to report a sale within 30 days; filing a Notice of Sale with your county tax collector protects you if the buyer gets tickets or has a crash before retitling. The same form, with both boxes ticked, works as the notice and the bill of sale.

What does the buyer need to do?+

Apply to transfer the title at a Florida tax collector's office within 30 days of the sale, or a late fee applies. They bring the signed-over title, this bill of sale, proof of Florida insurance and ID. A vehicle last titled in another state also needs a VIN verification (form HSMV 82042).

What happens to the license plate?+

In Florida the plate belongs to the seller, not the car. Take it off before the buyer drives away; you can transfer it to another vehicle or surrender it.

Does it need to be notarized?+

No. HSMV 82050 has no notary section. Both parties sign, and the odometer statement is made under penalty of perjury.

Is my information uploaded?+

No. The form is filled in inside your browser. Only a VIN you look up is sent to the federal NHTSA vehicle database.
